Feb 28 update

FRIDAY UPDATE for Laura Laparra
February 28

Laura is still progressing! Blessings!

The swelling around her neck has reduced dramatically, so much so, that she was able to go into a pediatric neck brace last night. This is much more comfortable for her.

She has full use of her body and arms, and walked down the hall last night.

She will be transported from the hospital to the rehabilitation facility either today or tomorrow.

We received some amazing news yesterday. An Arizona company has offered to match the funds that will be raised in the March 8 yard sale by 100 percent!!

We are in AWE of this generosity! Please join us on March 8, for a great service opportunity!

Feb 26 update

Laura has had her trach tube removed and can breathe on her own. She is able to walk, with help, for short distances. This picture of beautiful Laura with two of her daughters was taken last night.

She is very weak and tires very easily. But she is progressing. She still can't talk, but she can whisper and mouth words.

Yesterday, her father was with her when she became quite agitated. She took his hand and put it on her head. He said, "Are you saying that you'd like a Priesthood blessing?" She nodded yes. So, her father laid his hand on her head, and gave her a blessing. She immediately calmed and was able to rest. It was a sweet and touching experience.

Laura will be moved into a rehabilitation center this weekend. Please keep Laura and this wonderful family in your prayers. They need your faith and prayers so very much.

(P.S. Laura gave the thumbs-up for me to post this photo.)

Lessons learned from Laura's daughter Shannon

There is so much I'd like to say and share with everyone about the things that I've learned and seen through this experience. But if I had to sum it all up, I'd have to say that I am so amazed to learn that Heavenly Father prepares us for these hard times. Time and time again I just am in awe when I realize that, "oh hey...so what didn't make sense a couple months ago, makes sense now!" I know that the only reason why I have been able to put up with everything that's been going on is because Heavenly Father has slowly been preparing me for this moment. I was telling my aunt the other night how just in the last 6 months I have slowly grown closer to my youngest sister Priscillla. For no reason in particular, I just decided to take her under my care and do everything I could for her. She began to respond more to me and I grew to love her intensively. I became very protective of her and we spent every extra moment playing together! Now, with the accident, Priscilla has been able to be responsive to me when I needed her to because we had created this relationship. I can tell she really needs me and sees me as her second mom. I cant truly describe how grateful I am that I can help her the way I can because we began to trust in each other early on. I know that Heavenly Father has prepared us both to help each other. There's lots more instances such as this one, but for now maybe that's good:) ...I confess that during this time I feel anxious and worried about my mom, and that all the prayers, the little signs of love, how vast this thing has become--it all comforts me more than anything else. I admit my strength somewhat relies on these little" pick-me-ups" if you will:) haha, I can't help but just feel so much happiness through this testimony that God has created us in a way where are spirits are all connected, and that there is something so pure and marvelous about the way we all help each other go back home to Him. Thanks everyone

Special Feb 24 update #2

SPECIAL MONDAY NIGHT UPDATE for Laura Laparra.
February 24

I am writing this from Laura's hospital room. You can see in the photo that Laura is giving the thumbs up to all of you! (Gil's sister is by the bed.)

Laura has not lost her sense of humor ... or her sharp mind. We had brought Gil a bag of our pure fish powder which he asked for, but when Laura saw it, she grabbed it and clutched it to her chest! (You can see the package in the photo.)

Also, I read to Laura the beautiful comment that Jason Barney made on FB about the prayer that was offered for Laura at Saturday's rehearsal for the Gilbert Temple Cultural Celebration. When I finished reading it, she mouthed the words, "I love that."

We are truly witnessing a miracle. God's blessings are being poured out.

A correction on my earlier post today: Laura feels it would be best to hold off a bit on her young daughter's visit, so I just wanted to clarify that. Vintage Laura -- always thinking of others

And a P.S.: Laura is not very happy that her head has been shaved … but to all of us, she has never looked more beautiful!!

Helaman 5:47

MONDAY UPDATE for Laura Laparra
February 24

MIRACLES CONTINUE! As most of you know, Laura was taken out of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) yesterday. She was moved to another room on the same floor. This was not only a miracle, but a wonderful blessing because, for the first time since the accident, Laura was able to see her seven-year-old daughter.

Last night, Laura stood for a few seconds and actually took a couple of tiny steps while holding on to Gilberto. Little baby steps, but huge progress!

Laura's memory appears good, and she recognizes people. Yesterday, she was able to write on a notecard these words to Gil: "I love you."

While this progress makes us "shout" praises to God and His amazing kindness, we must remember that Laura has a long way to go and a long recovery process. The doctors have said there will definitely be "bridges to cross." We were humbled and saddened that the patient who has been right next to Laura in ICU all of this time, passed away yesterday. Our prayers go out to that family.

Last Saturday, more than 12,000 teenagers, who were gathered for a rehearsal for the Gilbert Temple Cultural Celebration, prayed for Laura by name. One of Laura and Gil's daughters is involved in this magnificent production which will be televised live this Saturday night (on cable and online). Yes, now Laura will be able to see it!

Once again, Gil sends his deep appreciate for your continuing faith and prayers.

"Peace, peace be unto you because of your faith in my Well Beloved, who was from the foundation of the world."

Feb 22, from Gilberto

Yesterday the therapists encouraged Laura to move to see how she would react, and all of the doctors and nurses were there. She was able to move her arms and legs, and they were successful in getting her to sit up– everyone began to clap, and all were in tears and filled with emotion… a miracle has happened, I feel it, I’ve witnessed it, I’ve felt it, I’ve lived it – it is the biggest confirmation of love from my Heavenly Father towards myself and my family. I know that it’s a medical miracle, but more so for me it is a miracle of love – love from my family, from my friends and acquaintances, that have silently prayed with faith and love. I feel like the richest man in the world for this unconditional love that all of you keep giving me.

From a ward member on Thursday, Feb 20

My dear ward members. I had the pleasure of visiting with Laura and Gil Laparra today. When I asked Laura if she wanted essential oils applied to her feet she nodded her head yes (she's an oil junkie like me:) As I was massaging her feet Gil hummed beautiful songs to her, it was such a sweet moment. When I was finished and Gil asked her if she liked it she gave a thumbs up. I feel so blessed. Today was a good day!!!!

Feb 21 update

February 21

Fasting and prayers work miracles. The doctors have been able to cut back Laura's sedation quite a bit. She can open her eyes, and she can follow simple commands.

She is not able to move her head or body, because she is in restraints that keep her from being able to move in order to heal. She recognizes her family, although she cannot talk because of tubes and swelling.

Although she is still very fragile, the doctors are encouraged by her progress. She is still in ICU (intensive care unit) and will remain there indefinitely until she comes off the critical list.

Your continued prayers and thoughts are so important, and they are appreciated more than you know.

"... the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the
children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him. Wherefore, let us be faithful to him."
1 Nephi 7:12

JUST NOW: We just received word that Laura is going back into surgery in a few minutes. The doctors are going to try to insert a feeding tube in Laura's stomach. Gil asked that we pray that all will go well.

Feb 20 from Gilberto

My dear friends, today at 6 am Laura recognized me, and a tear came from her left eye... today is one of my best days of my life. I love you all, please keep praying with me.

Feb 19

Laura had a good night. She is going to have surgery today to perform a tracheostomy, a small opening in the trachea (or windpipe) below the vocal cords. This is a simple and common procedure.

Since Laura cannot breathe on her own yet, this procedure will allow her breathing tube to be removed so that it will no longer press against her vocal cords. If the breathing tube is left in for too long, it can cause damage to her vocal cords (which has not happened).

So, this procedure is important, and it's a blessing. Laura's doctors are amazing, and she has the best medical care possible.

Below is a picture of the "love wall" by her bed - with family photos and a picture of the Gil and Laura in front of the Gilbert Temple.

After this week, Gil would like for me to post updates on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. However, if there is ANY change or a situation we need you to tell you about, we will definitely update you more frequently.

Thank you for your continuing prayers.

"Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall eternal life." 2 Nephi 31:20

Febrero 19 2014

February 18

Laura's condition is still the same, which is very good news. She is still fragile, still critical, but she remains stable. She had a good night, and her ICP pressures (pressure on the brain) were under control.

It is important to know that Laura's progress will be slow due to the nature of her injuries. To see a significant change may take weeks, so seeing her stable and not getting worse is wonderful.

She is not in pain. She always has a family member at her side. Gil and the girls are at peace. The Laparra family remains a beautiful example of faith and trust in God.

The words of Matthew 6 in the Holy Bible express a comforting message, as sung in a hymn by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This is one of Laura's very favorite hymns:

"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, how they grow.
Consider the birds in the sky, how they fly, how they fly."

"He clothes the lilies of the field, He feeds the birds in the sky.
And He will feed those who trust Him, and guide them with His eye."

Ella no siente dolor.

Feb 17

This morning, Gil had a beautiful experience at the hospital as he held Laura's hand and watched her. He said he was filled with great love and peace, and he knows it is from yesterday's fasting and prayers.

Laura is stable, and Gil feels very positive. She is still in critical condition, but she is receiving great medical care. Gil has received messages from people throughout the U.S., Canada, and Central America who have fasted for Laura, and whom he doesn't even know. It touches him deeply.

Today, it happens that Laura's nurse is a member of the LDS Church, as the Laparra Family is. The nurse told Gil today that two of the other nurses, not members of our faith, attended the Gilbert Temple Open House with him because of this situation. The Gilbert Temple is so important to Laura and Gil (and it's where they were walking to when they were hit), so that meant a lot to Gil.

A few days ago, the nurses asked Gil to bring pictures of Laura, so they could see what she looks like normally (without her head shaved and without tubes). So, there are photos of Laura and the family posted on the wall next to her bed. What a beautiful scene that is!

In addition, Gil asked me to tell you this:

He asked Laura's nurse, "What have you learned from being a trauma nurse? How do you stay so positive?"

The nurse said this to Gil, which is what Gil wants to share with you today, "My work teaches me how fragile life is. Our lives can change in a moment. We need to live our lives the best we can, remembering this, so that we will always be found on the Lord's side."

Feb 16 update

Sunday, February 16, 3 p.m.

Laura is stable today. The pressures on her brain have gone back down, and her blood pressure is good today. The stent did its job last night and drained fluid from her brain to relieve the pressure.

This is nothing alarming for now. The doctors have said that she will have good days and bad days. Laura's healing will take time - weeks and months.

She is still in a medical coma. She is comfortable and not in pain. She definitely has brain activity and registers some response when the sedation is pulled back. But it is very important that her brain cells rest and not receive much stimulation right now.

She is still on a ventilator to help her breathe. Her difficulty in breathing is because her airways are still extremely swollen. Once that swelling goes down, the ventilator tube can be removed, and she will be able to breathe on her own.

You may have seen the picture of Laura, with tubes everywhere. Even though her head is shaved, she looks beautiful. Some of us refer to her as "Sleeping Beauty." And all those tubes are doing their job. The miracle of modern-day medicine and technology is an amazing gift.

Laura is in a trauma hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, and she has incredible doctors and nurses attending her. She is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and she is still in critical condition. But she is stable, and all is well for now.

Today, Laura's daughters were able to see her for the first time since she was put in ICU. Your prayers are helping them be strong at this difficult time.

The oldest daughter, who is serving as a missionary in Texas, was able to make a short video for the family, which Gil received last night. With permission of the mission president, a wonderful member in her Texas ward, helped her record a two-minute video message from her to her dad and sisters. She also made a video for her mom - she sings a song she wrote two years ago for Laura. It is Laura's favorite song.

It is possible that the video will be posted. I will let you know what Gil decides. It is in Spanish, since she is serving a Spanish-speaking mission.

Gil said that he has faith that we will see a miracle and that, "Laura will be returned to us." He asked me to tell you that he knows that families can be together forever.

He said, "Tell everyone of the love and appreciation I feel from my ward, my stake, the Easter Pageant, and my other dear friends and family, here in the U.S., and in Central America. I can really, truly feel a change in my spirit because of their prayers."

Gil is aware of the many people who have put Laura's name on temple prayer rolls throughout the world. He knows that many, many people are fasting with him today. He and his parents, as well as Laura's family - who have arrived safely from Costa RIca - feel the strength of your prayers and faith.

Today, Gil attended church at an LDS ward near the hospital. He was astounded that people knew who he was, and ward members said they were fasting and praying for him. These are people he didn't even know. He is deeply touched to see "tender mercies" everywhere he turns.

Early this morning, Gil received a phone call from a former high school classmate in Guatemala. This sweet sister is living in Utah now. She told Gil on the phone, "I want to let you know that praying for Laura is helping and pushing me to be a better person. The love I have for your family is making me be better."

I feel that perhaps all of us can say the same thing. As Gil said just a few moments ago regarding all of you: "We can literally feel your prayers."

The Lord lives. We have a Heavenly Father who knows us, loves us, and is always there for us, no matter what. How can we be more blessed?

UPDATE for Laura Laparra
February 15

We have just talked with the doctors, and Gil asked me to post this immediately.

Early this morning, Laura experienced some complications. She is having a CT scan right now. At this point, Laura can receive no visitors, not even Gilberto.

She has had a rough morning, but this is not surprising. The doctors said from the beginning that this would happen.

Gil also asked me, just five minutes ago, to tell you this: PLEASE do not go to the hospital without calling Gilberto first, even if you are considered closest friends. This is so important.

Gil's parents are there, Laura's parents are there, and her brother, as well.

Please continue to pray. Gilberto and the family know that God is in control. They pray mightily for her recovery, but their prayers always end with "Thy will be done."

What they want is what God wants for Laura. The LaParra family has complete trust in God. His ways are not always our ways, but in the eternal perspective, they are always the right way.

There is no need for panic right now. This is a time to continue praying with faith. The family still feels complete peace. I will update you as we get updates. We love and appreciate you all.

The Laparra Family is having a Fast for Laura tomorrow, Sunday, and invite all who would like, to join them.

Many things to tell you today …

Yesterday, the doctors began cutting back Laura's sedation. Last night, we were very excited that she began showing a little progress. The doctors even tried to get her to breathe on her own. But, she is not able to come off of the ventilator at this point.

Also, throughout the night, the pressure and swelling in her brain was high. This was to be expected since she had purposely been given less sedation yesterday. But again, so far, the stent is doing its job of draining fluids from her brain and relieving pressure.

The doctors are optimistic but said that everything could change in a moment. Her condition is still critical and extremely fragile. This morning, the doctor said she is still comatose, but that's good because what she needs right now more than anything else is sleep so that her brain can heal. Gil feels that the fact that she is still alive, still with us, and without complications so far, is a HUGE MIRACLE.

I was at her side late last night, and even though she was in a deep sleep, there was peace on her beautiful face. There was peace and love surrounding her bed. It was almost tangible.

Laura's parents and brother are being picked up right now at Sky Harbor Airport. This is another miracle. They were able to get their passports and visas in ONE DAY. In addition, they had to fly stand-by out of Costa Rica, early this morning. But they were able to get on the flight, sitting on Row 6, and they have arrived. Prayers work! Much appreciation to those who physically helped this happen. They have asked not to be named, but they are heroes.

As a side note, Laura's father is in the Costa Rica Temple Presidency, and her brother is a bishop (pastor) for the LDS Church in Costa Rica.

Here are reports we have received that are deeply touching and that have given Gil and the family much strength:

Oldest daughter, Michelle, is serving a mission in Texas. All of the missionaries in her mission are praying for Hermana Laparra's mother.

This week, many 7th and 8th graders at Highland Junior High in Gilbert, where 14-year-old Pamela attends, started a rotating fast, of their own accord, so that a group of students is always fasting each day for Pamela's mom.

Pamela told Gil yesterday, "Some of them are not even members of our Church." This idea originated with, and was organized by, these youth, themselves -- what a noble generation!

In addition, 18-year-old Shannon, has a part in the Gilbert Temple Cultural Event, which features 12,000 youth in a musical/dance production, celebrating the new Gilbert Temple -- where Laura and Gil were heading when they were hit as pedestrians. The support of the youth and leaders involved in this incredible production has been a wonderful blessing to Shannon and the family. We are sure Laura would want you to watch the telecast of that event on Saturday night, March 1st.

And, Priscilla, second grade, has been busy the past few days, making hand-made Valentine cards for each of her classmates. She has been so excited for Valentine's Day!

The power of friendship and love is resting upon the Laparra Family. It is comforting them and strengthening them, and it is deeply appreciated.

There has been some confusion about who can visit the hospital and who cannot. So, I spoke with Gil this morning and ask him what I should tell you about this.

The hospital has reminded us that the ICU Waiting Room is only for families of the patients, and the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) is full right now. The waiting room is very small and only seats about 15 people; visitors are not allowed in the hallway.

We have heard of small groups who want to visit Gil at the hospital. But, Gil is very desirous to abide by hospital policy. He said that we want to be obedient so that the powers of Heaven will be unrestrained in this situation. So for now, if you, as an individual, feel it necessary to come to the hospital, please call and ask Gilberto first.

Thank you for your sweet understanding and patience. If Laura can keep stabilizing, and not digress, there will be a time when everyone who wants can tell her personally how much she is loved. Please continue to pray for that! Your faith and prayers are so very, very important.

Reporte de Salud de Laura Laparra
Feb. 13
Buenas noticias!

Anoche ocurrio algo maravilloso.

UPDATE for Laura LaParra
Thursday, February 13

Good news! Laura is remaining stable. She had a good night. The stent in her brain is doing a good job of draining the fluids and keeping the pressure under control. Her blood pressure is normal now. She remains critical and very fragile. But, she is not having any complications for now. Please keep praying. Gil is deeply grateful for the thousands of prayers that are being offered for Laura. He feels your faith and love. Your "likes," your comments, your kind words, and your personal and family prayers are giving much strength to him and his family.

A wonderful experience happened last night.

While Gil was at Laura's bedside, one of the nurses called him away. She whispered to him, "Who ARE you?"

Gil said, "What do you mean?" The nurse said, "We feel something very special when we are with Laura. We know many, many people are concerned for her. Who is she? Who are you?"

You can imagine the conversation that followed as Gil told her of their belief in Jesus Christ and a loving Heavenly Father who cares about each one of us and loves us.

Gil told her that the reason that he and Laura were on their way to work at the Gilbert Temple Open House, when the accident happened, was because in Temples we learn how to keep our families strong, and we learn how families can be together for eternity.

One of the nurses asked if she could go to the Open House and see the Temple that he is talking about, and where Laura was so excited to work as a volunteer.

Blessings abound as Laura, even unable to breathe on her own, is a beautiful influence to those around her. Even in her sleeping state, she testifies of God and His love.

Again, thank you to all. As Gil says, words can never express how grateful he is to each of you.
